Prior to this class, I thought that I had a fairly good understanding of sociology. I have since learned and realized how encompassing socially is and how important it can be. Sociology is defined as the study of human social relationships and institutions. It ranges from crime to religion, racial issues and social class, and so on. The purpose of sociology is to understand how actions and consciousness are both shaped and shape cultural and social structures. Sociologists dedicate their lives to studying the nuances of society and culture and their relationship to everything else. They attempt to understand how what is done effects everyone on a personal and societal level. They investigate things from the personal level, to the societal, and even global levels. Sociology contains three main perspectives, symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and conflict theory. Symbolic interactionism is more of a micro concept, while the other two are macro concepts. It involves the use of sym bols and focuses on face to face interactions and their value and meaning. Functionalism is fairly utilitarian, in that it focuses on the issues and relationships that exist within parts of society. It looks at how certain areas of society function. Conflict theory is more focused on how everyone is competing for ever scarcer resources and how the elite control everything and everyone. In relation to the aforementioned statements, it is to be said that employers although are required to make all the reasonable requirements they are not required to keep job positions open in circumstances when the employee fails to perform the essential duties even after being provided with the special accommodation or when the employee is not expected to return to work in a reasonable time period. However it is to be ensured in relation to the provisions as stated in section 17 of the Human Rights Code and other statutes related to disability discrimination that no employee is to be discriminated on the basis of disability.
